Workflows with Wait for Update Action

We have many workflows in production that utilize the Wait for Item Update action.  There could be anywhere from 50 to 100 items with the workflows still running on them (in the waiting state looking for multiple field changes).

Is there a threshold that I need to keep in mind regarding performance impact with so many workflows continously running?
